From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The Best Fifa Football Awards 2019 are over as Lionel Messi surprisingly took home the best men’s player to upset Virgil Van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Liverpool and Juventus stars could at least take consolation from making the 2019 Fifa Fifpro World XI.

But there were some notable omissions, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has enjoyed a fine year for the European champions, but missed out as Sergio Ramos was selected as a right-back to make the team.

While Bernardo Silva also missed out despite Man City and Portugal’s success, with Eden Hazard selected as a midfielder.

Alisson, Sergio Ramos, Matthijs De Ligt, Virgil Van Dijk, Marcelo, Eden Hazard, Luka Modric, Frenkie De Jong, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe all made the final cut – but here is out alternative XI from those not selected from the final XI on the 55-man shortlist:

Who would you have picked for the world XI?
