A Spanish football referee warned players they would be sent off if they spoke Basque during a fifth-tier football match, according to reports in Spain.

The match – between Elgoibar and Idiazabal – was played in the Basque country, an autonomous community in northern Spain with its own language.

It is said the referee does not speak the Basque language and therefore did not want to miss players using insult, but region's culture and sports deputy, Denis Itxaso, has requested an explanation.

“The attitude of this referee can't be overlooked,” he said.

“These type of episodes do nothing but create a lack of respect towards the language and heritage.”

A report from the local council has however stated no further action will be taken against the official.

Like Catalonia, the Basque country has strong cultural traditions as well as its own language.
