Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

When is it?

The award ceremony begins at 5.30pm GMT, with the winner announced at around 8pm on Monday 12th December.

Where is it?

Unlike in previous years, the ceremony will not take place in Zurich at Fifa’s headquarters. However, since France Football magazine end their partnership with Fifa for the award, it will now be held in Paris.

Where can I watch it?

It is not currently scheduled to be shown on British television at the moment despite it being broadcast on Sky Sports in previous years.

Who’s on the shortlist?

France Football released a 30-man shortlist in October which, as well as including the usual suspects, also listed Leicester pair Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez. Vardy is the only Englishman on the list after firing Leicester City to the Premier League title last season, as well as breaking Ruud van Nistelrooy’s goalscoring record for netting in consecutive games.

The shortlist contains 13 La Liga stars, five from the Bundesliga, three from Serie A and one from the Portuguese Super League. Although the top five (at least) are all expected to be from La Liga.

Odds?

Gareth Bale: 25/1

Luis Suarez: 10/1

Antoine Griezmann: 8/1

Lionel Messi: 5/1

Cristiano Ronaldo: 1/6
