Only eight nations remain at Euro 2024 and, somehow, England are still one of them.

A date with Switzerland awaits Gareth Southgate’s side now after struggling through the group stage and mounting the very latest of late escapes in the last-16 against Slovakia, with an injury-time equaliser sending the tie to extra-time, where a goal from Harry Kane sealed their progress.

Jude Bellingham scored the spectacular 96th-minute strike to keep England in the game - and the tourmament - but ensuing celebrations left some offended. “An inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight,” he suggested - but that didn’t stop Uefa opening an investigation over potential indecent conduct, which could yet see him face a ban.

There remains much for Southgate to solve though, including a defensive riddle with Kieran Trippier a doubt and Marc Guehi suspended - and the rest of the team not playing well either.

Jude Bellingham hits back at ‘rubbish’ being spoken about England team

Jude Bellingham said he was hitting back at the “rubbish” being spoken as he rescued England’s Euro 2024 campaign with a stunning last-gasp overhead kick equaliser against Slovakia.

The Real Madrid man had struggled to make an impression on the last-16 tie in Gelsenkirchen as England looked set to be heading home before his moment of inspiration, with Harry Kane then heading home in extra time to secure a 2-1 win.

Gareth Southgate’s side will now meet Switzerland in Dusseldorf on Saturday as England look to end a 58-year wait for a major men’s trophy.

Bellingham celebrated his wonder goal by raising his arms and shouting “Who else?” before seemingly gesturing a talking expression with his hand.

How would you fix England’s Euros team? Join The Independent Debate and share your starting XI and tactics

England is set to face Switzerland in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals after Jude Bellingham dramatically saved Gareth Southgate’s team with an overhead kick against Slovakia in the last-16.

England was on the brink of a major upset, leading for much of the game after Ivan Schranz’s early goal.

Southgate’s position was in jeopardy, but his decision to stick with his core players paid off as they transformed a potential defeat into a crucial victory, keeping England’s dreams alive.

Bellingham’s spectacular overhead kick in the 95th minute sent the match into extra time, where captain Harry Kane gave England the lead. The Three Lions then held firm to advance to the quarter-finals.

Gary Neville singles out Gareth Southgate’s ‘illegal’ England choice vs Slovakia

Gary Neville urged Gareth Southgate to “rip up the script” after England went into half time 1-0 down against Slovakia in the Euro 2024 last-16, as the pundit said Trent Alexander-Arnold starting the knockout tie on the bench was “illegal”.

Neville called for the Liverpool right back to be introduced alongside Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer and said Southgate had to “intervene” to save England’s chances, but there were no changes at half-time.

Jude Bellingham’s stoppage-time stunner then saved Southgate’s England from an embarrassing last-16 exit as the Euro 2024 hopefuls fought back to win 2-1 after extra time.

A summer that promised so much looked set to end in heartbreak and humiliation for a team that went within a penalty shoot-out of winning the last edition three years ago.

Euro 2024: Alan Shearer insists England criticism ‘is not personal’

Alan Shearer insisted his criticism of Gareth Southgate’s England team at Euro 2024 “is not personal”.

The former England striker has described the Three Lions’ performance on the pitch as “awful” this tournament - despite the team making it to the quarter-finals.

Addressing the criticism during BBC’s Match of the Day on Monday (1 July), Shearer said: “I don’t ever have a problem with criticism, so long as you don’t get personal and I don’t think we have and I don’t think anyone has.

“Even the payers and manager say it’s not been good enough.”

Jordan Pickford’s prepared to be put on the spot again in a shoot-out

Jordan Pickford insists he would be ready to recreate his Nations League penalty heroics when England face Switzerland in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals.

The game in Dusseldorf is a repeat of the third-place play-off of the inaugural Nations League tournament in 2019.

After a 0-0 draw, England would secure third spot with a 6-5 shoot-out victory, with goalkeeper Pickford scoring the fifth spot-kick before saving Josip Drmic’s effort and sealing the win.

Uefa hands out over €1m of fines after fights and fireworks at Euro 2024

Uefa has hit nations at Euro 2024 with a total of 1,270,000 euros worth of fines for offences committed by either the host nation or supporters.

England have been charged relatively little, just 12,500 euros for disturbances during the national anthems and throwing of objects.

Croatia on the other hand have been handed a total of 220,875 euros worth of fines, including more than 119,000 euros for the throwing of fireworks.

Teams were fined across the tournament for a variety of reasons, including throwing of objects, lighting of fireworks, invasion of a field, improper conduct of the team, crowd disturbances and transmitting a message unfair for a sports event.

Gareth Southgate says England have found their Paul Gascoigne moment at Euro 2024

Gareth Southgate believes Jude Bellingham’s goal against Slovakia can be a spark for England’s tournament, like Paul Gascoigne’s goal against Scotland at Euro 96, as he made a point of stating the legend of that tournament and the 1990 World Cup has made people forget performances were initially poor.

While Southgate accepted that his team have “got to be better”, he feels that the 95th-minute equaliser to eventually eliminate Slovakia showed a “togetherness” and “spirit” essential to any tournament. The manager also believes it will “give the whole group belief”, just like Gascoigne in 1996. Southgate feels that will be essential against an “excellent” Switzerland team in the Euro 2024 quarter-final.

“Well, there’s no question it will give the whole group belief,” he said. “The boys that came on and contributed that had a big impact on what we were doing: the togetherness and the spirit that you need.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold can dispel Gareth Southgate myth with obvious England change

The Trent Alexander-Arnold Experiment is dead. Time for another Trent Alexander-Arnold Experiment. Liverpool’s vice-captain seems a misunderstood, underused talent at international level. His time in midfield spanned 123 minutes against Serbia and Denmark and was of sufficient importance, such a scientific voyage of discovery, that it assumed a status of its own. It was an ‘Experiment’.

That it has been deemed a failure was apparent when Gareth Southgate worked his way through a series of partners for Declan Rice against Slovakia – Kobbie Mainoo for craft, Conor Gallagher for graft, Jude Bellingham for overhead kicks – and no scenario called for Alexander-Arnold.

Not as a midfielder anyway. But there felt a pressing need for Alexander-Arnold in his original incarnation, as the right-back revolutionary, the creator supreme, a player with a capacity to make the extraordinary happen. There appeared to be a shift in thought when Gary Neville, England’s most capped right-back until a couple of weeks ago, said it was “illegal” that Alexander-Arnold wasn’t playing. “He’s the best footballer at right-back we’ve ever seen in this country,” said Neville, a more prosaic talent recognising an extraordinary one.

Gareth Southgate’s ‘experiment’ with Trent Alexander-Arnold did not work, but a more conventional role, Richard Jolly writes, could suit both the Liverpool star and offer England a solution to their lack of creativity in possession

Pickford hails England’s ‘golden boy’

Jordan Pickford lauded “golden boy” Jude Bellingham after he rescued England’s Euro 2024 campaign in the roller-coaster last-16 clash against Slovakia.

After winning Group C in unconvincing fashion, the Euro 2020 runners-up were on the brink of a humiliating exit akin to Iceland eight years ago in what would almost certainly have been Gareth Southgate’s last match.

England looked set to fail in their bid to cancel out Ivan Schranz’s opener for wily Slovakia, with Phil Foden seeing a goal ruled out for offside by the VAR, Harry Kane wasting a great chance and Declan Rice hitting a post.

But Real Madrid star Bellingham scored a jaw-dropping leveller five minutes into stoppage time, with his overhead kick followed by a Kane header early in extra time as Southgate’s side won 2-1.

Jude Bellingham faces possible ban over gesture to crowd during England’s Euro 2024 win

Jude Bellingham faces a possible ban at Euro 2024 after Uefa opened an investigation into a gesture he made while celebrating the spectacular overhead kick scored against Slovakia in their last-16 tie on Sunday.

Bellingham equalised in the 96th minute to save England from a humiliating defeat, and they eventually prevailed in extra time to book a quarter-final with Switzerland.

In the aftermath of his goal, Bellingham was seen shouting “Who else?!” as he ran over to England fans after scoring. Video showed the Real Madrid forward then kiss his hand and grab his crotch in a gesture which appeared to be directed towards the side of the pitch.
