League One’s Charlton get a mammoth tie at Old Trafford while Man City travel to Southampton
Manchester City’s quest for a seventh Carabao Cup in 10 years will continue with a quarter-final tie against Southampton.
City beat defending champions Liverpool in a Christmas cracker on Wednesday evening, earning a 3-2 victory at the Etihad Stadium in the first game back after the World Cup break. Their next test will be a visit to St Mary’s in the week commencing January 9.
Meanwhile, League One Charlton Athletic’s reward for beating Brighton in the fourth round is a visit to Manchester United. The Addicks are the only non-Premier League side left in the draw and they face a stern test against United, who are currently 57 places above them in the league ladder.
Nottingham Forest, will be hoping to add more stories to their rich history in the League Cup as they host Wolves in a Midlands derby, while Newcastle United’s fans are beginning to dream of glory and they will have their sights set on a semi-final berth as they host Leicester City in the last eight.

90+4 mins: Manchester City hold on! They’ve knocked the Carabao Cup holders out of the competition in a barnstorming game under the lights at the Etihad Stadium.
There were goals for Erling Haaland, Fabio Carvalho, Riyad Mahrez and Mo Salah but it was Nathan Ake’s headed effort that decided the game.
Man City reach the quarter-finals and go into the draw for the next round which is coming up shortly.

90 mins: There’s four minutes of added time to play. Keita slips a pass into the penalty area for Nunez but Stefan Ortega flies off his line and pounces on the ball before the Liverpool forward can get to it.

87 mins: Bernardo Silva comes on to replace Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan for the final few minutes of the game. There’s three minutes plus a couple for stoppage time to go.

84 mins: Shot! Man City are piling on the pressure. The feed the ball out to Mahrez on the right side. Mahrez weaves into the box before cutting it back to De Bruyne who smokes a shot towards goal and sees it bocked by Fabinho.
The ball comes loose to Foden who lets fly with a shot of his own but Kelleher is on hand to turn it wide.

81 mins: City burst forward on the counter attack with De Bruyne in possession. He cuts the ball across to Mahrez who lays it off to Foden but the substitute has it nicked away on the edge of the box.

78 mins: Oh my. Rodri and Fabinho collide in the middle of the pitch after a challenge from the Liverpool midfielder. Fabinho wraps his legs around Rodri and hooks him to ground.
The Man City squares up to Fabinho and pushes him over causing a bunch of players to swarm the two and separate them.
The referee gets control of the situation and both players are shown yellow cards.
