Follow live coverage as Brentford face Crystal Palace today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.
The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing Pep Guardiola's side, but just as fascinating will be the race for Champions League places, with more teams than ever before having designs on top-four finishes. It's been a game of few chances, though Brentford have just about edged it with an xG (expected goals) of 0.37 to Palace's 0.27. It's not been a thriller, but Frank and the home fans will be happy if this is how the rest of the game plays out to secure three points to kick off the campaign.

The half-time whistle blows and it's the hosts who take a 1-0 lead into the interval. The game has hinged on a three-minute spell in which Eze saw a delightful free-kick controversially ruled out for a foul in the box, before the Bees went straight up the other end to take the lead. Mbeumo latched onto Wissa's pass before cutting in and firing into the far corner. Brentford looked to increase their advantage in the latter stages of the first half and nearly did so through Schade, but the ball went wide of the posts and it remains just a one-goal lead at the break.

With just over five minutes to go until the interval, it's the Bees doing most of the pressing. That Eze disallowed goal will be a talking point, especially with the hosts going and scoring almost immediately up the other end.
