Wolves survived a 2-1 home defeat by Queen's Park Rangers last night to edge into the second round of the Coca-Cola Cup with a 3-2 aggregate victory.
Wolves held a 2-0 lead from the first leg a fortnight ago but had to work hard to prevent the tie going into extra time, even though they dominated early on.
QPR went ahead when Gavin Peacock headed home a Trevor Sinclair corner, but Wolves recovered their composure after the interval and equalised in the 62nd minute after Steve Bull went for a cross by Steve Froggatt and was bundled over by Danny Maddix. Darren Ferguson scored the penalty, but four minutes later Paul Murray scored QPR's winner on the night.
Third Division Cambridge United forced extra time at The Hawthorns before losing to West Bromwich Albion, who are unbeaten in the First Division this season. Richard Sneekes put Albion through with a 103rd-minute penalty.
