Football: Williams blow for Wales
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Adrian Williams broke down in training yesterday, plunging Wales' preparation for their World Cup qualifier against Belgium in Brussels into crisis. The 26-year-old Wolves centre-back was forced to fly home after a desperate bid to prove his fitness failed.
Bobby Gould, the Wales coach, had gambled on Williams recovering from an Achilles injury in time to play in their final Group Seven match on Saturday.
Gould said: "We wanted to give him every chance of making it. He came out with us to Brussels after having treatment morning, noon and night. But he trained in the morning and it clearly wasn't going to stand up to any real match action."
His plans are in crisis, as he has already lost Manchester City's Kit Symons with a knee injury. Queen's Park Rangers' Karl Ready and Watford's Robert Page are the only recognised centre-backs in the party.
