Football: United pick up their cheque
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.MANCHESTER UNITED collected pounds 815,210 as the first FA Premier League champions when the positional prize fund of more than pounds 9m was distributed yesterday. As winners they collected 22 shares, while Nottingham Forest picked up one share, worth pounds 37,055, for finishing last.
However, the merit money accounted for a only quarter of the cash available at the Premier League share-out, as a result of the pounds 304m five-year TV deal the league signed with BSkyB. Clubs appearing in live TV games or on the BBC's highlights programme Match of the Day shared another pounds 9.375m, and the remaining 50 per cent of the funds was shared among the top flight teams and last season's down-and-outs West Ham, Luton and Notts County.
They collected a basic pounds 750,000 each. Newcastle United pocketed only pounds 50,000 for winning the Football League's First Division title.
