Football Round-up: Shearer tops Taylor's sick list
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.ENGLAND manager Graham Taylor tomorrow names his squad for the final World Cup qualifier - the expected goal- scoring beano against San Marino in Bologna on Wednesday week - and the usual disruptions to an already disjointed- looking team came early. Blackburn striker Alan Shearer and Liverpool full-back Rob Jones failed to finish their games yesterday while first- choice goalkeeper, Arsenal's David Seaman, needed six minutes' treatment on the pitch.
There was better news elsewhere of errant strikers who at last justified their job descriptions. Coventry City's Mick Quinn, who had not scored since his Highbury hat-trick on the opening day of the season, scored twice as the Sky Blues beat Everton 2-1. And Sheffield Wednesday's Nigel Jemson claimed a couple at Portman Road as the dominant Owls beat Ipswich 4-1. The East Anglians have not won at home in the Premiership since 21 August.
Speaking of no-win situations, Wimbledon had not won a game since Joe Kinnear was named Manager Of The Month at the beginning of October, a familiar curse. But yesterday's visitors, Swindon Town, come with a home-banker guarantee and once John Fashanu had broken the deadlock with his first Premiership goals since August, it was not a matter of who would win but by how many would the Dons' triumph. It ended 3-0.
In Perth, Scott Booth's late scrambled equaliser for Aberdeen against St Johnstone kept the Dons at the top of the Scottish Premier but Motherwell are within a point of them after a comfortable 3-0 win at Raith.
Some astonishing comebacks distinguished the First Division. Crystal Palace and West Brom both spectacularly blew two-goal leads. Notts County, trailing to Chris Armstrong goals at Meadow Lane, fought back with a pair from Gary McSwegan and Gary Lund's headed winner. Bolton's comeback to draw at the Hawthorns was just as remarkable. Two-nil down at half-time with goalkeeper Aidan Davidson sent off, Scott Green's header and a West Brom sending off set the stage for Jason McAteer's rocketing equaliser.
