Hull City, three places off the bottom of the Football League, beat Crystal Palace 1-0 in the first leg of their Coca-Cola Cup second- round tie at Boothferry Park last night. Duane Darby scored the only goal after 22 minutes from a pass by Hull's player-manager, Mark Hateley.

Palace's manager, Steve Coppell, was heavily critical of his Premiership side, who have the chance to overturn the deficit at Selhurst Park in a fortnight's time. "There was no quality in our side - just blind attacking," he said.

Blackpool again upstaged higher opposition, beating Coventry City. David Linighan's 76th-minute goal earned the Second Division team a 1-0 home win over their Premiership visitors. In the first round Blackpool beat Manchester City.

Alex Dyer's 75th-minute goal gave Huddersfield Town, of the First Division, victory over West Ham at the Alfred McAlpine stadium.
