NEWCASTLE UNITED regained third place in the Premiership, which they had temporarily conceded to Arsenal, with a 2-0 win against Ipswich Town at St James' Park last night.

The visitors' defence frustrated Newcastle's efforts until the 37th minute, when Scott Sellars opened the scoring to the delight of the majority of a 32,216 crowd. Andy Cole completed the scoring 17 minutes from time with his 36th goal of the season.

Crystal Palace suffered their second home defeat of the season. The Endsleigh League First Division leaders lost 1-0 to Middlesbrough, Craig Hignett scoring their winner after 11 minutes.

This reverse was also the Eagles' second in three games, although they remain five points clear at the top of the table.
