Football: Marshall saves battling Celtic

The Celtic goalkeeper, Gordon Marshall, saved a penalty last night as 10-man Celtic battled to a 0-0 draw in Slovakia in the first leg of the qualifying round of the Uefa Cup.

Marshall stopped a first-half spot-kick from Kosice's Vladislav Zvara. Celtic will try to complete the job at Parkhead on 20 August, although they will be without Simon Donnelly - who was sent off early in the second half. "Simon was just stupid. He had lost possession and chased after the player [Vladimir Janocko] and felled him," Tommy Burns, the Celtic manager, said.

Aberdeen made light work of their trip to Lithuania, beating Zalgiris Vilnius 4-1. Billy Dodds scored twice while Stephen Glass and Duncan Shearer were also on target.

There was no joy for Barry Town, however. The League of Wales champions lost 3-1 away to Vasas Budapest and had their goalkeeper, Mark Ovendale, sent off for handling outside his area late in the game. Terry Evans scored for Barry.

Rangers begin their European campaign tonight when the highly-rated Russian side, Alania Vladikavkaz, visit Ibrox in the preliminary round of the European Cup. Paul Gascoigne is suspended for both legs of the tie; Derek McInnes, who arrived from Morton last season, is likely to deputise for him.

Smith has further injury problems, with Alan McLaren, David Robertson and Craig Moore all missing tonight's game, but Ally McCoist and Richard Gough should both recover from slight knocks.
