Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

LINCOLN CITY have sacked their manager, Shane Westley, and his assistant, Wally Downes - and appointed their chairman, John Reames, to take over team affairs.

Reames will be assisted by a senior player, the former soldier Phil Stant, and the physiotherapist, Keith Oakes. Westley took Lincoln to promotion from the Third Division in May, just two months after his appointment following the dismissal of John Beck, but they have suffered 10 defeats in 12 matches this season and are bottom of the Second Division.

Halifax Town and Chester City are facing a stiff Football Association punishment after the referee Tony Leake confirmed he has included details of a mass on-field brawl that marred Tuesday's Third Division fixture at The Shay in his match report.

Halifax won the game 3-2 to move to the top of the table, but play was held up for five minutes as the home captain, Kevin Hulme, and Chester's Chris Priest exchanged blows and were joined by 18 other players and Chester's manager, Kevin Ratcliffe.

Kevin Keegan has signed his former Newcastle team-mate, Peter Beardsley, for Fulham on a free transfer from Bolton Wanderers.

Beardsley had been on a three-month loan stay at Craven Cottage, which expired last week. It had looked unlikely that a permanent move could be agreed for the 37-year-old, as Fulham were struggling to match his wages at Bolton, but a deal has been reached.

Coventry City have completed the signing of the 19-year-old Belgian Under- 21 right-winger, Laurent Delorge, from Ghent for pounds 1.25m.

Watford have signed the French midfielder, Alexandre Bonnot, for the remainder of the season from Angers. The 25-year-old started his career with Paris St-Germain.

Fifa, world football's governing body, has urged the Republic of Ireland and Yugoslav Football Associations to permit the Charlton players, Mark Kinsella and Sasa Ilic, to join their international squads on Saturday evening, thus allowing them to play for their club against Middlesbrough that afternoon.
