But they can take pride from a battling display in a 1-1 draw that did much to restore pride after a 3-1 first round, first leg defeat on the Riviera.
It might have been a different story after Mark Riley's first-half goal had given Rugby Park hope of a dramatic recovery. But a goal from Yugoslav midfielder Zoran Milinkovic 15 minutes from time finally put the tie beyond the their reach.
Bobby Williamson, the Kilmarnock manger, said: "I am disappointed for the players because they gave everything they had. We certainly didn't play in Nice in the first leg but we gave them a real game tonight.''
Williamson now has to gee up his squad for a match against Celtic at Parkhead tomorrow.
