Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Luton Town's supporters have had little to cheer about in recent times, but Julian James gave the Second Division side reason to celebrate when he scored the only goal of the first leg of their second round Coca-Cola Cup tie at home to Derby County last night.

Another Premiership side, Leicester City, had few problems at Scarborough, Muzzy Izzet and Jamie Lawrence scoring the goals in a 2-0 victory.

Sheffield United lost 2-1 away to Stockport County, who were two up inside 39 minutes. Fulham also looked likely to cause an upset at home to Ipswich Town, but Simon Milton's late equaliser earned the First Division club a 1-1 draw after Simon Morgan had given Fulham a fourth-minute lead.

Crystal Palace did not allow the impending managerial changes at the club affect them on the pitch. In what may have been Dave Bassett's last game in charge before his move to Manchester City, Palace won 3-1 at Bury.

Charlton cruised to a 4-1 win over Burnley at The Valley, while Tony Naylor's fifth goal of the season brought Port Vale a 1-0 home win over Carlisle, who had Dean Walling sent off in the 51st minute.

Lee Richardson scored late on to bring Oldham a 2-2 draw in their match with Tranmere at Boundary Park. Rovers' player-manager John Aldridge scored a 13th-minute penalty.
