Football: Enfield turn back to Westley and Pearce

Enfield have turned back to the past in their quest for a brighter future. The Isthmian League club have given two former players the challenge to bring the good times back to Southbury Road, following the departure of George Borg from the manager's office.

The Middlesex club won what is now the GM Vauxhall Conference twice in the 1980s but have been languishing in the Isthmian League since 1990. They have been runners-up in the Premier Division for the last three seasons, but a return to the non-League top flight has eluded them. This summer's cuts to his playing budget unsettled Borg, and it was little surprise when he moved on to the manager's job at Aldershot Town last week.

Borg's replacement is Terry Westley, who was in charge at Kingstonian until he made way for Geoff Chapple, the former Woking manager, at the start of the season. Westley is a former Enfield player, as is his new assistant, Graham Pearce, who appeared for Brighton in the 1983 FA Cup final against Manchester United. Pearce is also a former manager of Enfield - he was in charge from August 1990 until Boxing Day the following year.

Despite the financial difficulties faced this summer, Westley and Pearce know only one thing will satisfy the demanding fans at Southbury Road: a return to the Conference. "My ambition is to see silverware in the table," said Westley, who realises what he has let himself in for. He added: "If you can't take the pressure, you shouldn't take big jobs like this one."
