Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

JOHN DREYER, the Stoke City defender, endured a terrible afternoon against his old club, Luton, when he gave away a goal, a penalty and was then sent off in the 2-1 defeat.

Dreyer's debacle began in the 23rd minute when he stumbled on the ball to allow Luton's Dwight Marshall to score from 10 yards.

Five minutes later the Stoke goalkeeper Carl Muggleton came to Dreyer's rescue when he saved David Preece's penalty after Dreyer handled. But after 55 minutes Dreyer's afternoon ended in disgrace when he was dismissed for a professional foul on Marshall.

Stoke reorganised and appeared to have stolen a point when Martin Carruthers scrambled in an 81st- minute equaliser, but Luton gota deserved winner when Preece stabbed home Paul Telfer's centre.

England salvaged a 2-1 victory over a hard-working Iceland side in the first leg of the quarter-final in the women's European Championships in Reykjavik on Saturday.

Gillian Coultard, the England captain, gave her side the ideal start with a seventh-minute goal but Iceland equalised in the 31st minute. However, Kerry Davis netted England's winner in the 60th minute to give them a valuable lead when they next meet Iceland in the return leg on 30 October at the Goldstone Ground.

Joe Kinnear, the Wimbledon manager, is planning to spend pounds 1.5m on signing two players, as yet unidentified, as he is not prepared to wait to see whether their former centreforward, John Fashanu, can be lured back from Aston Villa to south London.
