ENGLAND, without the injured Nicky Barmby, scrambled into the quarter-finals of the World Youth Cup here yesterday, their defeat of Turkey ensuring they finished top of Group C. They now meet Mexico here on Sunday with a place in the semi-finals at stake.

England's winner came from Barmby's replacement, the Leicester City striker Julian Joachim. It arrived in the 11th minute following a long throw by the Newcastle right-back Steve Watson. Ian Pearce flicked the ball on into the heart of the Turkish defence where Joachim pounced, ramming home a firm shot.

England had to survive a last- minute penalty when the Oldham defender, Marvin Harriott, brought Mustafa Kocabey down in the area. However, Ilhami Arslan, the Turkish captain, placed his spot-kick well over the bar.

The goal was just reward for a brilliant opening 15 minutes by England which saw them go close on four occasions, with Steve Watson hitting the base of the post with a right-foot shot.

But Turkey gradually came back into the match and Kocabey was just wide in the 33rd minute with a right-foot shot after a cross from Arslan. Chris Bart-Williams was booked just before half-time as Turkey pressed forward.

England returned to the attack early in the second half, with Joachim shooting weakly at the Turkish keeper Murat Turksoy. Oktay Dereloglu, the Turkish striker, became an increasingly influential figure as the half wore on, producing a good save from Watson and then blasting wildly over the bar.

England never looked in serious doubt to finish top of the group until the last-minute penalty awarded by the Uruguayan referee, Jorge Nieves.

All in all it was a professional performance from the England teenagers which brought praise from their manager, Dave Burnside. 'Reaching the quarter-finals justifies the FA decision to set this precedent and in future all England teams will expect them (club players) to be made available,' he said. 'Most of the players think that's the right thing to do.'

Burnside also described the penalty decision as debatable, claiming Harriott had won the ball cleanly in the tackle.

Darren Caskey, the Spurs player voted man of the match, will be donating his pounds 500 prize to cancer research in honour of the late Bobby Moore. BSkyB will be showing England's quarter-final match live from 8am on Sunday.

England are quoted as second favourites behind Brazil, who comfortably beat Norway 2-0 with goals from Gian - a left-foot shot - and the brilliant Adriano - a classy solo run.
