Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Luckless Bury struck the woodwork twice in the last five minutes but failed to force a late equaliser against well-organised Stockport.

Mark Patterson blasted a 20 yarder against one upright, Gordon Armstrong hammered the rebound over an empty net and then a glancing header from Peter Swan struck the other post and Tony Battersby also wasted the rebound.

But despite their late rally Bury never did enough to threaten the victory which would have lifted them three places from next to bottom of the First Division.

Stockport, in the top third of the table, served early notice that they were prepared to tough it out. Kevin Cooper forced Dean Kiely to dive at his feet to save and Brett Angell was inches away from meeting an inviting cross .

The familiar story was repeated in the 16th minute when Alun Armstrong combined well with Paul Cook on County's left. A superb cross to the far post cleared the entire Bury defence and the unmarked Angell volleyed his 18th goal of the season.
