Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.THE FORMER Tottenham striker Jurgen Klinsmann bid farewell to football with six goals last night as he helped his hand-picked World XI to an 8-6 win in his testimonial match over a team from his first senior club, VfB Stuttgart.
A 53,000 sell-out crowd at the Gottlieb Daimler stadium saw the 34-year- old Klinsmann score in the 33rd, 55th, 60th, 71st, 73rd and 85th minutes, and Rudi Voller - his former World Cup strike partner - also hit the back of the net with two second-half goals.
After a match in which the former Germany coach Berti Vogts, in charge of the World XI, substituted Jurgen Kohler with the tennis player Boris Becker for the last 25 minutes, Klinsmann said: "I wanted to do things differently and have everyone go home with a smile on their faces, having fun."
