Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Don Howe is set to become the Football Association's technical co-ordinator. The 59-year-old, who was first part of the England set-up 17 years ago, is currently negotiating terms and an announcement is expected early in the new year.
Howe, who won 23 caps for England as a right-back, is seen as the perfect candidate for the post. His task would be to begin the FA's overhaul of the coaching structure throughout the game from schools to Premier League, in preparation for the appointment of a technical director.
Howe managed West Bromwich Albion, Arsenal, Queen's Park Rangers and Coventry as well as working in Turkey and Saudi Arabia. But his reputation was built as a coach, initially alongside Bertie Mee in Arsenal's Double-winning side, then with the England managers, Ron Greenwood and Bobby Robson, and at Wimbledon when they won the FA Cup.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have spent £134,000 on the former Queen's Park Rangers centre-half, Brian Law - two years after he retired because of ligament injuries in both feet. The 24-year-old Welsh international restored his fitness on a back-packing trip around the world.
Graham Taylor, the Wolves manager, has also set up a £50,000 deal for Millwall's winger, Jermaine Wright, a cousin of Arsenal's Ian Wright, while Notts County, have spent £100,000 on the QPR striker Devon White.
Huddersfield Town were also spending money yesterday, taking two players from Bradford City: the midfielder and Valley Parade's captain, Lee Duxbury, who was priced at £250,000 plus appearance increments, and the defender, Lee Sinnott, who cost £105,000.Another defender, Graham Mitchell, made the opposite move on a free transfer.
