Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

These are bad times at Bayern Munich and Paris St-Germain, two of Europe's elite clubs. In Germany's Bundesliga, Bayern were thrashed 4-1 at home by mid-table Karlsruhe - their fifth defeat of the season - while PSG, still the French League leaders, suffered their third consecutive League loss: 1-0 at Strasbourg.
"We made terrible mistakes in our defence," said the Bayern coach, Otto Rehhagel, whose side are second in the Bundesliga, three points behind Borussia Dortmund. The South African striker, Sean Dundee, scored twice for Karlsruhe.
Luis Fernandez, the PSG coach, fielded four strikers to no avail in the second half against Strasbourg, who took the lead with a Franck Leboeuf penalty just before the break. PSG lead Auxerre, who lost at Rennes, by three points and Metz, who have three games in hand, by four.
In Italy's Serie A, Roy Hodgson's Internazionale gained their first away win of the season, 1-0 at Torino, thanks to Marco Branca's 12th goal of the season. Their city rivals, Milan, top the table with a seven-point lead over Fiorentina after a 3-2 win over Bari, who twice recovered from a goal down to draw level before George Weah headed the winner two minutes from time, sustaining a head injury in the process.
