DAVID BROOME, who preferred to ride in Dublin rather than travel as reserve to last week's European Championships, earned Britain's first win of the show when he took the Kerrygold Classic last night.
Broome, omitted from the British team who won silver in Spain last Friday, won a six- horse jump-off on Lannegan, leaving Michael Whitaker, winner of the European individual bronze medal, in fourth place.
Broome collected pounds 5,000 for his clear round in 41.84sec to beat France's Roger Yves-Bost, riding Samsung Tresor du Renom, into second place. Whitaker was faster than Broome over the jump-off course but Everest Monsanta, his 17- year-old partner, hit a fence.
