Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Stefan Effenberg, the German player who was sent home from the World Cup in disgrace after making a gesture to the crowd, is reported to be moving back to Borussia Moenchengladbach.

The club said yesterday that Effenberg, who is 26, will be rejoining them on a one-year contract from Fiorentina, the Italian first division side, in a DM1.6m (pounds 600,000) deal. His salary will continue to be payed by the Italian club, with whom he is under contract until 1997.

Effenberg played for Borussia from 1987 to 1990. A possible move to Werder Bremen was eventually ruled out following a financial disagreement. Werder's manager, Willy Lemke, who had given Effenberg until Monday to decide on the move, said yesterday: 'We neither can or want to accept Fiorentina's conditions.'

Denmark's coach, Richard Moeller Nielsen, has named a 16-man squad including the attackers Michael Laudrup, of Real Madrid, and his brother, Brian, who plays for Rangers, for the home friendly against Finland next Wednesday.
