Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

MARTIN EDWARDS, the Manchester United chairman, yesterday concluded a week of asset-stripping at Old Trafford with a message of reassurance for worried fans. "That's it for now," he said.

For now, then, United are without Paul Ince and Mark Hughes, so does this mean that they are to lose more players later? Edwards said not, despite speculation among fans that Andrei Kanchelskis and Lee Sharpe could be the next to vacate the club. "The last thing we need now is for anyone else to go. I have not heard anything about Lee and I hope Andrei stays," Edwards said.

Kanchelskis, a rumoured target for Blackburn and Leeds, will today be petitioned by the Independent Manchester United Supporters' Association at his home in Altrincham. "We are delivering a letter, in Russian, to him," spokesman Richard Kurt said. "Basically we are telling Andrei we all love him and want him to stay part of the Manchester United family. He is the kind of footballer and family man, who needs to feel wanted and we don't think that is happening at United at the moment. There is a general malaise in the dressing room and a crisis of confidence."

The same group was invited to Ince's home last week after delivering a similar letter to the England midfielder. However they were unable to prevent his move to Internazionale which, together with Hughes' move to Chelsea, has swelled United's bank balance by pounds 8.5m. Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager, will set about spending it when he returns from his family holiday in California. Hristo Stoichkov, the Bulgarian international, Juventus's Roberto Baggio and Mark Draper from Leicester are believed to be his targets.

Coventry yesterday moved into the transfer market, signing Paul Telfer, the 23-year-old Luton midfielder. The fee for Telfer is likely to be decided by a tribunal, but Coventry are expected to recoup around pounds 500,000 from the sale of Mike Marsh to Galatasaray, the Turkish club where he will link up with his former boss Graeme Souness.

Sporting Lisbon yesterday declared that they had signed Jose Dominguez, the 21-year-old Portuguese winger, from Birmingham City for pounds 1.28m. City, however, are keen to hold on to Dominguez. "Nothing has been done. We have signed no forms," Barry Fry, the manager, said.

Faustino Asprilla, the Colombian striker, has vowed to leave Parma. "It is over between Parma and me. I will never play for that club again," Asprilla said in a newspaper interview. Borussia Dortmund, the German champions, are hoping to sign him. In the interview, Asprilla blamed coach Nevio Scala for his poor goalscoring record, an interesting piece of public criticism since he has already been fined pounds 17,000 for another newspaper attack on Scala.
