Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

I have seen improvement in him already. I'm not saying he is the finished article, but he's shown people he is trying to change. But he is doing it without it affecting him as a footballer. The first 10 minutes was a difficult time for Paul but he overcame that. When you have had the pressure he's had fand you've come through a game like that, I'm sure there was a lot of relief in the end, but he has been as good as gold in the dressing-room.

Glenn Hoddle on Paul Gascoigne

I had to put my football head on and I've been proved correct. He was under a lot of pressure but has come through it. I think it did take him ten minutes to settle into his game, but he came through.

On selecting Gascoigne to start

There were a lot of good performances but it was how we got it right as a team that was the backbone of our victory.

We gave the Georgians a lot of respect. It's not an easy place to come and win but we probably deserved it.

On the team's performance

Sol made his full debut in an environment like this and has come through well. It looked as if he'd been there all his life.

On Sol Campbell

Batty was excellent, the man of the match for me. I asked him to do a job with Paul Ince in midfield and he did it. He destroyed the ball for them and then used it intelligently.

On David Batty

You would never think he had been away, his defending was tremendous.

On Tony Adams

Ian Wright came on and could have had a goal. Teddy and Les had a great game but it was a terrific team performance for me. But there is still room for improvement.

Above all, England have proved they most certainly are not a one-man team.

On the absence of Alan Shearer

Shearer is a world-class striker, but to lose him and still have these sort of players to come in is a credit to the football in our country. We have produced a lot of good strikers who can give us that cutting edge.

On the abundance of strikers available to England

All in all, it was a good performance from the youngsters, the new faces and the experienced players as well.

On the team

I have seen them tear people apart here. We showed the team a 45-minute video of that.

On Georgia

Georgi Kinkladze is a superb footballer, but we stopped him playing today.

On the Football League's favourite Georgian

Psychologically it gives us an advantage going into that game because we've got our noses ahead on the points board. It means there's going to be extra pressure on Italy when they come to Wembley, but that's not until February.
