The 2019 edition drummed up one of the best races in modern history as the 22-year-old Colombian Egan Bernal eventually triumphed, after the thrilling Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe had lit up the opening two weeks of the race.
For Bernal it was his first Grand Tour victory, and he was emotional on the podium as his national anthem played.
There were tears of a different kind during the race when French hope Thibaut Pinot abandoned the race suffering with a knee injury, producing a now famous image of his tearful exit.
And as ever at the Tour, the diverse scenes found across France, from the flat plains of the Massif to the mountains of the Alps and the Pyrenees, created a stunning backdrop for the race to unfold.
