Tour de France stage 18 summary

The 2018 Tour de France is reaching its climax and the final day of mountain racing promises to be a thriller.

While it is set to be a dramatic day of racing it will also be a brute as the peloton take on three of the four climbs considered part of the Pyrénean 'circle of death': the Col d’Aspin and Col d’Aubisque sit either side of the highest pass in the French Pyrénées and one of the great Tour de France climbs, the Col du Tourmalet.

Race leader Geraint Thomas has three stages between him and the greatest win of his career. Saturday's time trial will favour world champion Tom Dumoulin but today won't be without problems either as he faces attacks from all sides. Team Sky will hope to shut it down and create a snoozefest, of course, but there is enough there for it to produce fireworks – if enough riders are prepared to gamble.

We will have all the latest throughout the day.

Damien Gaudin leads the field over the Cote de Capvern-les-Bains peak, securing himself one King of the Mountains point, but more crucially taking one of those remaining for Warren Barguil to try and close down polka dot jersey-holder Julian Alaphilippe.

The leaders are now only 45 seconds ahead of the chasing group, and the peloton has reeled them back in to a gap of 3:52 with 144km to go. So far there's little to report in terms of direct threats towards Thomas and Froome.

That's it, the chasing group has caught the leaders and developed an 18-rider pack that is crammed full of talent, with polka dot leader Julian Alaphilippe and Adam Yates among them.

The rest of the pack features: Andrey Amador (Movistar), Warren Barguil (Fortuneo-Samsic), Daniele Bennati (Movistar), Marcus Burghardt (Bora-Hansgrohe), Sylvain Chavanel (Direct Énergie), Romain Hardy (Fortuneo-Samsic), Gorka Izagirre (Bahrian-Merida), Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo), Mikel Nieve (Mitchelton-Scott), Tom-Jelte Slagter (Dimension Data), Arthur Vichot (Groupama-FDJ), Silvan Dillier (AG2R), Damien Gaudin (Direct Energie), Bob Jungels (Quick-Step), Lukas Pöstlberger (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Tanel Kangert (WorldTeam Astana).

Lucky for Bob Jungels, a puncture a few minutes ago has not cost him too much time as he managed to recover into the second group, and re-catch the leaders as they closed the gap. The first sprint is anything but that, as Damien Gaudin cruises through as the pack focus on the bigger picture.

Sagan in trouble

The sprint leader is really struggling today as the injuries he suffered in a crash on Wednesday start to take their toll. The Swiss is still fighting on, but he's starting to drop off the peloton and the time cut-off will be looming large at the end of today's slog of a stage.

115km to go

Julian Alaphilippe rides clear of his fellow breakawayers to earn enough king of the mountains points to seal the polka dot jersey, so long as he makes it to Paris on Sunday. It has been a great Tour for the Frenchman with two stage wins, as part of an impressive Quick-Step Floors team, and he has undoubtedly starred in the photo of the race.

100km to go

The 12-man breakaway have begun the Tourmalet with a lead of around three and a half minutes. Will we see an attack from one of the GC riders back down the road?
