Your support makes all the difference.England will probably have to take Michael Vaughan's form on trust when their captain reports for Test duty at Lord's on Thursday week after another opportunity to register a substantial score slipped through his grasp here.
Vaughan seemed to have a perfect platform after Yorkshire were left to play out 75 overs to seal a draw against Nottinghamshire but he failed to build on a promising start, bowled off the bottom edge for 34 as he tried to cut the off-spin of Graeme Swann.
It had been a similar story in his first innings in this match, when he appeared set for at least a half-century before playing one ambitious, attacking stroke too many and giving a catch on the boundary.
This time his confidence was strong again after half a dozen boundaries. He insists that he is technically sound, but this latest premature dismissal means his six innings so far this season have yielded 113 runs.
He at least occupied the crease for almost six hours in this match, and against a high-calibre attack featuring two England strike bowlers in Ryan Sidebottom and Stuart Broad – who claimed his wicket in the first innings – as well as the highly regarded Charlie Shreck.
Now Vaughan has only the Friends Provident Trophy match against Durham tomorrow in which to convince after a dip in form during the second half of the winter, when he averaged only 20 in the three Tests in New Zealand.
Vaughan's demise sparked a steady whittling away of Yorkshire's survival objective by a Nottinghamshire side looking for a second victory of the season. Chris Read's epic 142 had turned a losing position into a potential winning one as the visitors were all out for 422, gaining a lead of 123.
Anthony McGrath (43) and Jacques Rudolph (32) both fell when seemingly in command and then the dismissal of Adil Rashid to a fine catch at deep backward square began a collapse from 149 for 4 to 168 for 8 – effectively 45 for 8, with still, potentially, almost an hour left. Yorkshire were indebted to the calm heads of Darren Gough and Tim Bresnan for saving them from further embarrassment.
