Waugh struck by Malcolm blow
The Australia captain Steve Waugh was forced to leave the field at Canterbury yesterday after being struck on the hand by the former England bowler Devon Malcolm.
Waugh, who only this week replaced Andrew Symonds as Kent's overseas player, had little time to react to a ball which leapt off a good length. He was assessed by the physiotherapist at the end of the sixth over and was advised to leave the field. Kent finished on 217 for 4 in reply to Leicestershire's 259 in the County Championship First Division fixture.
The Australia leg-spinner Stuart MacGill took five wickets as in-form Nottinghamshire overcame the loss of a complete session to the weather to cruise to an innings and 84-run Second Division victory over Gloucestershire.
Despite Jack Russell's 45 not out in more than two-and-a-half hours, the home side ruthlessly wrapped up their fifth win in six Championship games. MacGill grabbed four of the wickets to fall on the third day at Trent Bridge to finish with 5 for 92.
Resuming on 91 for 5, Gloucestershire started in positive mood. With Russell content to play a supporting role, Matt Windows went for his shots but was dismissed for 40 and the visitors fell away to 219 all out.
Northamptonshire also won inside three days in the Second Division, beating Glamorgan by eight wickets at home.
