Michael Vaughan, still officially the England captain, was last night said to be in line for a dramatic return to action, with the news he could play for the Academy in a one-day game against Western Australia's second XI in Perth tomorrow.
A decision will be taken after consultation between England physiotherapist Kirk Russell and his Academy counterpart Craig Ranson. If Vaughan plays, it will add to the speculation that he might yet make an appearance in the Ashes.
Vaughan was at the first Test in Brisbane which England lost by 277 runs and had batting and fielding sessions before leaving for Perth to continue his rehabilitation. The third Test in Perth (14-18 December) may now be a realistic prospect.
