Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Leicestershire's Australian all-rounder Daniel Marsh may be out for the season after fracturing a cheekbone in the County Championship First Division game against Surrey on Saturday.

The 28-year-old Tasmanian – Leicestershire's leading scorer in the Championship with 600 runs in nine matches – is due to go into hospital for surgery tomorrow. He was struck in the face while fielding at slip on the final day of the match against Surrey.

Leicestershire's manager Jack Birkenshaw said: "It is a massive blow to us and I feel very sorry for Daniel. He will certainly be out for a minimum of five or six weeks and it could be longer depending on what the specialist says after the operation on Wednesday.

"He has been in terrific form for us and will be a big loss to the side. We will wait to get the specialist's report before deciding what to do but it is possible we may look for a replacement. He is a big player to lose at this stage of the season."

Marsh, the son of the former Australian Test wicketkeeper Rodney Marsh, has hit four half-centuries plus a century in the Championship for Leicestershire this summer and averages just over 46 with the bat.

Sachin Tendulkar will not travel with India for the one-day triangular tournament in Sri Lanka because of a foot injury, an Indian cricket board official said yesdterday.

The one-day series involving India, New Zealand and hosts Sri Lanka starts on July 18. The final is slated for August 4. Tendulkar is due to join the team on 1 August, a day ahead of India's final round-robin game against Sri Lanka, and would be available to play if India reached the final.
