Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Sri Lanka's batsmen continued to prosper as they began their tour match against Glamorgan in typical style.

Kumar Sangakkara led the way with a century as the four left-handers at the top of the order looked set to steer them to over 400. The pace slowed as Glamorgan claimed four wickets for 21 runs late in the day but Sanath Jayasuriya will be happy with his side's efforts.

It was the captain who set the tone with a rapid 57 in an opening stand of 97 with Russel Arnold before he was caught behind by Mark Wallace off Alex Wharf. Sangakkara scored a chanceless century before becoming Wallace's second victim off Darren Thomas for 113.

Robert Croft was Glamorgan's most economical bowler, with 1 for 61 from 27 overs while Wharf claimed 4 for 71

* The Sri Lanka team manager Chandra Schaafter does not expect Muttiah Muralitharan to be ready for the second Test at Edgbaston, but is hoping he might be fit for the third at Old Trafford. Muralitharan briefly turned his right arm on the outfield at Cardiff yesterday, but his action is restricted by the injury to his left shoulder. "It seems very unlikely he will play in the second Test and we are only hoping he can play in the third," said Schaafter. "It is just a matter of how quickly he gets back into shape."
