From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Durham's attempts to make up for lost time proved in vain as no play was possible after lunch on the second day of their County Championship First Division relegation clash with Hampshire at Riverside.

Durham's attempts to make up for lost time proved in vain as no play was possible after lunch on the second day of their County Championship First Division relegation clash with Hampshire at Riverside.

After making 104 for 1 in 40 overs between the showers on Thursday, Durham added 142 in 33 overs of positive batting to reach lunch on 246 for 4.

Simon Katich fell four short of 1,000 Championship runs for the season when he was out for 60, edging an attempted cut to first slip, and then Paul Collingwood edged Peter Hartley to second slip for 12.

When the acting captain Jon Lewis, fell for 70, chopping a ball from Shane Warne into his stumps, Durham had slipped from 134 for 1 to 172 for 4.

But Jimmy Daley, who finished unbeaten on 31, and Martin Speight then put on 74 in 16 overs before the rain arrived.

Heavy showers meant that only three balls were bowled on the opening day of the First Division match at Taunton with play finally being called off at 4.40pm.

Leicestershire had won the toss and invited Somerset to bat. The only play came just before tea when Phillip DeFreitas sent down three deliveries to Mark Lathwell, who fenced at the last and was caught behind for a duck.
