Afghanistan were close to producing one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Mohammad Nabi's smart 52 had Afghanistan eyeing the greatest-ever World Cup upset, only for Shami to send him packing - then clean bowl Aftab Alam and Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the next two balls.
Shami's four for 40 and Jasprit Bumrah's two for 39 delivered a bowling masterclass to allow India to defend their paltry 224 for eight from their full 50 overs.

44.1 India 192-4 MS Dhoni 28 Kedar Jadhav 31
OH. MY WORD.
What have we just seen!
Dhoni calls for a run then backs out. Jadhav comes all the way after being sold down the river and is miles away from the non-strikers' end. Rashid Khan has the ball, has time and has space, but can't find the stumps.
MS Dhoni (28) st Ikram Ali Khil b Rashid Khan India 192/5
Khan immediately makes up for it!
Having just fluffed his lines with a run-out chance, Khan finds a huge amount of turn and Dhoni is a foot away from his crease when the bails light up.
45.2 India 198/5 Hardik Pandya 1 Kedar Jadhav 36
Afghanistan go with Aftab Alam, inviting India to attack him.
Jadhav takes the invitation on the slow ball and touches it through fine leg for four.
46 India 205/5 Hardik Pandya 1 Kedar Jadhav 43
Jadhav brings up 200 with the first maximum of the day, slamming a powerful effort into the air and just over Rashid Khan at long on. Jadhav looks like he's about to walk the minute he hits that.
46.4 India 206/5 Hardik Pandya 1 Kedar Jadhav 43
Rashid Khan begins his final over with two dots and a wide then thinks he gets Pandya.
Ikram takes the stumps off and we go upstairs.
The replays show his foot was down. Not out.
Review
The googly gets Jadhav! It's another wicket for Rashid Khan....wait, for is it? We go upstairs.
Decision overturned! The ball is missing the wickets and Jadhav lives to fight another day. He was walking but took Pandya's advice to have a closer look at that LBW decision.
48 India 213/5 Hardik Pandya 4 Kedar Jadhav 47
Galbadin Naib brings himself into the attack and is making things happen with the slower ball.
Pandya sneaks a two then gets off strike after hitting on hard to square. Good running from Jadhav to turn one into two to end the over.
India 217/6
Hardik Pandya (7) c Ikram Ali Khil b Aftab Alam
Aftab delivers a slow bouncer and it's probably going to be called a wide if Pandya leaves it, but he tries to prod it over the keeper despite the lack of pace. In the end, it's a very easy catch for Ikram.
Mohammed Shami comes in to bat on his first match in this World Cup. He probably did not expect to be at the crease today given the form his side were in ahead of this game.
