From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Mohammed Shami's final-over hat-trick broke Afghanistan hearts as India sealed an 11-run World Cup win at Southampton.

Mohammad Nabi's smart 52 had Afghanistan eyeing the greatest-ever World Cup upset, only for Shami to send him packing - then clean bowl Aftab Alam and Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the next two balls.

Shami's four for 40 and Jasprit Bumrah's two for 39 delivered a bowling masterclass to allow India to defend their paltry 224 for eight from their full 50 overs.

10 Afghanistan 37/1 Rahmat Shah 5 Gulbadin Naib 10 (Target 225)

Hardik Pandya comes into the attack and has some apologising to do after bouncing one well over MS Dhoni and away for four. I wouldn't look Virat Kohli in the eye for some time if I was him.

10 Afghanistan 37/1 Rahmat Shah 5 Gulbadin Naib 10 (Target 225)

Right, that's the first powerplay done with and Afghanistan are just short of the 41 India recorded inside a slow first 10 overs, however they have greatly benefitted from eight extras, whereas India mostly did it themselves.

11 Afghanistan 42/1 Rahmat Shah 10 Gulbadin Naib 10 (Target 225)

Very relaxed from Rahmat as he stands and admires his shot to the deep midwicket rope and he's not exactly setting an agressive tone by failing to run hard despite picking up four after a close chase to the boundary/

12 Afghanistan 54/1 Rahmat Shah 11 Gulbadin Naib 21 (Target 225)

Two very good shots from Gulbadin over the leg side and away for four take Afghanistan north of 50. There's definitely a plan in place to target Hardik Pandya, who is 0/19 after two overs.

13 Afghanistan 55/1 Rahmat Shah 11 Gulbadin Naib 22 (Target 225)

You wonder whether Virat Kohli needs to be using Hardik Pandya right away. India will want to bowl Afghanistan out inside 40 overs otherwise things will get tight. They need wickets now.

15 Afghanistan 57/1 Rahmat Shah 11 Gulbadin Naib 24 (Target 225)

Just one from the over as Chahal keeps a hold on the run-rate that just threatened to start getting out of control.

Shah and Naib are going well together.

15.2 Afghanistan 58/1 Rahmat Shah 11 Gulbadin Naib 25 (Target 225)

Kuldeep Yadav comes in for his second over and thinks he has Rahmat. Is there anyone with quicker hands behind the stumps that MS Dhoni?

We go upstairs after he rips the bails off...NOT OUT.

16 Afghanistan 61/1 Rahmat Shah 14 Gulbadin Naib 27 (Target 225)

Well bowled, Yadav. One goes straight through Shah's swing and narrowly misses the stumps.

Four from the over for Afghanistan.

GOT HIM!

Gulbadin Naib (27) c Vijay Shankar b Hardik Pandya

There's some race smiles on those Indian faces as they finally break a partnership that was developing well.

Gulbadin launches one very high to midwicket and Shankar is underneath it.

Hashmatullah Shahidi joins the fun and games
