The Hundred returns in 2022 after the inaugural edition of English cricket’s franchise short-format competition was held last year. Pre-tournament favourites Southern Brave became the first men’s champions, and will be hoping to again assemble a strong squad in the player draft. Teams were permitted to retain up to ten men’s players from 2021, negotiating new contracts during the retention window. After the retention period, there are 42 open spots across the eight teams to be filled in a snake-draft system held remotely.
Welsh Fire have the most spots to fill, with seven, while the defending champions and Trent Rockets have only four players to recruit. London Spirit have the top pick having finished last in 2021. Each team has a single “Right to Match” card that can be used to match the bid made by another outfit for a player under contract in 2021, provided they have a pick in the necessary salary band. 17 overseas and 25 domestic players will be slotted to teams during the draft, before squads are filled out by one overseas and one domestic wildcard in July.
While international commitments may impact on availability, there are a number of high-profile overseas stars likely to attract top-bracket attention – with David Warner, Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell chief among them. Batters Laurie Evans, who failed to agree a retention deal with the Oval Invincibles, and Joe Clarke could capitalise on strong winter performances and be high-ticket domestic options.

A top four all capable of opening up should ensure a fast start for Trent Rockets, and could be mixed and matched to complement one another’s strengths. It is a versatile group of bowlers will hope to draw upon knowledge of home conditions - Andy Flower has again looked to plenty of Nottinghamshire or ex-Notts bowlers - and build around the brilliance of Rashid Khan. Tom Moores may be included to take the gloves, but Tom Kohler-Cadmore has been working on his keeping to diversify his skillset, and it may be part of the reason why he commanded such a high price.

Still those two wildcard picks to be made, but here is how the bulk of the Oval Invincibles squad will look for the second edition of The Hundred (Men’s):

Plenty of bases covered with a complete, quite well-rounded side, though may need one of the Currans, most likely Sam if not on Test duty, to step up as a more consistent finisher with the bat. With a number of domestic stars occupying the bigger price bands, Rossouw and particularly Cartwright are less flashy, but can play a variety of roles.
Trent Rockets Men go top-order heavy
Four additions to the Trent Rockets squad, which is now chock-full of explosive batters who will enjoy the Trent Bridge surface and short square boundary. Tom Kohler-Cadmore spent a winter working on his game against spin in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, and is another of the now plentiful free-scoring English opening batters.
Colin Munro had a good season for Manchester Originals last year and his usage will be interesting - more traditionally an opener, Munro has shown that he can bat slightly lower down, and may have to with so many options at the top for the Rockets. Ian Cockbain is a shrewd pick having found his groove in the shorter formats and starring for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash.

World Cup winning skipper Meg Lanning to call Trent Bridge home
Big business for the Trent Rockets: Australia captain Meg Lanning, who withdrew from last year’s competition, has joined the Nottingham-based side. Alana King, breakout star of the Australian summer, is another addition from the World Cup winners, while Mignon Du Preez completes a strong set of overseas players.
Bryony Smith will be looking to reignite her international career after being away with England A in Australia, and is a very handy signing from Welsh Fire.

Champions Oval Invincibles bring in Lauren Winfield-Hill
Having retained the strong South African group that helped lead them to victory a year ago, the women’s Oval Invincibles side did not have a spare overseas spot, but have capitalised on the availability of England batter Lauren Winfield-Hill to snare the opener at a reasonable price.
Aylish Cranstone swaps London franchises having not featured at the Spirit last year but gives the Invincibles a left-hand option, and all-rounder Emily Windsor and keeper-batter Kira Chathli have been added to a relatively settled side, too.

Oval Invincibles retain Sunil Narine as top overseas player
Oval Invincibles continue to keep faith in the group that finished fourth in the inaugural edition of the men’s hundred, with Sunil Narine returning as the lead overseas choice. Rilee Rossouw is a well-liked left-handed top-order player who should be available for the entirety of the tournament, while Hilton Cartwright is a bit of a surprise choice to complete the overseas list, but coach Tom Moody has strong ties to Western Australia, where Cartwright plays his state cricket.
Left-arm spinner Danny Briggs feels a sensible signing after his release from the Southern Brave, and Matt Milnes and Jack Leaning have become very steady operators for Kent, and fill out the squad.
