The man who forsook the England captaincy and plunged world cricket into turmoil last night insisted he acted properly. Tony Greig, delivering the annual MCC Spirit of Cricket lecture at Lord's, said: "I have never had any doubt that I did the right thing by my family and by cricket. After the initial nastiness and internal feuding, cricket and cricketers also did quite well out of World Series Cricket."
While captain of England, Greig acted as chief recruiting agent for WSC, a breakaway competition formed by television mogul Kerry Packer. Greig said it forced cricket to reinvent itself to survive a changing world.
