England slumped to a record eighth successive defeat against Pakistan at Lord's today after slipping to a dramatic two-run defeat in the NatWest Triangular series.

Somerset left-hander Trescothick hit a superb 137, his highest ever score in one-day cricket, and looked to have put England on course for their first victory in the NatWest Triangular series after sharing a record fourth-wicket partnership with youngster Owais Shah.

But England instead lost seven wickets 44 runs in nine overs and were dismissed for 240 off the last ball in reply to Pakistan's 242 for eight to confirm their worst sequence of successive one-day defeats in their history.

Trescothick hit three sixes and 11 other boundaries during his 142-ball innings and looked to have made amends for his role in running out opening partner Nick Knight in the third over of their reply as England slipped to 26 for three.Middlesex batsman Shah, making only his second appearance, showed great composure in forging a 170-run partnership with Trescothick from only 183 balls - eclipsing England's previous highest in one-day cricket of 154 between Graeme Hick and Neil Fairbrother against Sri Lanka in Adelaide two years ago.

Once Shah was run out backing up for a determined 62 from 94 balls, England collapsed and lost four wickets for nine runs in 24 deliveries and, after needing only 46 from the final 10 overs, fell only two runs short when last man Andrew Caddick was stumped off the final ball from Saqlain Mushtaq.

Pakistan had also recovered from a shaky start with the returning Andrew Caddick claiming two wickets in an over to leave them struggling on 60 for three only for Yousuf Youhana to continue his impressive recent form with a second successive half-century.

Youhana forged a crucial 80-run fourth-wicket partnership with Younis Khan and then added a further 50 with Rashid Latif before falling just four overs before the end of their innings for 81.
