Dravid revels in an Indian success story to rival the legend of '71

India were yesterday revelling in their first major Test series win outside the subcontinent for 20 years, and the first in the Caribbean for 35 years.

Anil Kumble took six second-innings wickets in Jamaica on Sunday as India claimed a 49-run win in the fourth Test at Sabina Park to secure a 1-0 victory. A win in Zimbabwe last year aside, India had not won outside the subcontinent since beating England in 1986.

"It's a great feeling," the captain Rahul Dravid said. "It's good for this team to be the one that changed that and the one that will be remembered. We had to work hard for it and I think it's been well deserved."

Dravid drove his side to victory, scoring 81 in the first innings and 68 in the second of a low-scoring match. "To win the series and for it to be such a close game, it would probably be one of my most satisfying couple of knocks that I've played," he said.

There was also a fine performance from Kumble, who ripped through the West Indies in the second innings. The spinner finished with figures of 6 for 78. "This is my third trip to the West Indies so I wanted to ensure that I did well," he said. "Being the senior bowler in the team, it was important that I delivered."

Dravid believes his team's achievement deserves to be added to the great moments in Indian cricket history. "We've always heard about the 1971 team and Anil [Kumble] was the only one born, just born, when India won last in the West Indies," he said. "For all of us, growing up hearing the history of Indian cricket, that was a very significant series, and I think, hopefully, this will prove to be a significant one as well."

The India batsman Sachin Tendulkar is to continue his comeback after shoulder surgery in next week's Twenty20 charity between a World XI and Pakistan at The Oval. The match will raise funds for Pakistan's Earthquake Relief Fund. Dravid and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, also fresh from India's Test series victory, will play as will Brian Lara and Muttiah Muralitharan.

Pakistan will choose from a full squad, even though the match is scheduled to take place less than three days before the start of their four-match Test series against England at Lord's on 13 July.
