County round-up: Maynard rubs salt into Welsh wounds

Glamorgan were given a bitter reminder of their off-season problems yesterday when Tom Maynard scored a century against them for his new club Surrey. Maynard, who left the Welsh county after his father Matthew resigned as coach over the winter, hit 123, his maiden ton, in a Surrey total of 575 for 7.

Maynard's Glamorgan exit came as part of the fall-out following the decision to strip Jamie Dalrymple of the captaincy. Maynard elder, who had been a supporter of Dalrymple, decided he could not continue and subsequently his son thought likewise. It is the cause of plenty of disquiet in Cardiff: Maynard was regarded as the club's best batting prospect.

Now, though, he is one of Surrey's stars. Another is Zander de Bruyn, who left Somerset for the Oval over the winter. He hit 22 fours and three sixes in a career-best 172 yesterday, and Chris Schofield was run out on 99. Glamorgan slumped to 95 for 4 in reply.

An innings of high quality from Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale made Nottinghamshire suffer at Headingley, where the home side established a commanding lead. Gale scored 145 not out – two more than Nottinghamshire's first-innings total – as Yorkshire made 336, for a lead of 193.

The visitors then lost their first three wickets for 38 before Alex Hales was joined by Adam Voges in a fightback.

An injury to key bowler Andre Adams handicapped Nottinghamshire, yet it seemed Gale might run out of partners before Yorkshire could stretch their lead beyond 111, as it stood when Ryan Sidebottom was ninth out.

But Gale skilfully protected number 11 Oliver Hannon-Dalby to the extent that he was required to face only 19 balls in almost an hour before edging the 20th to second slip. In the meantime, Gale took his chances, scoring 78 in a last-wicket stand worth 82.

Samit Patel bagged a pair as Sidebottom added two more wickets to his first-innings four, but Hales and Voges combined in a 105-run partnership for the fourth wicket before Hales was bowled by Pyrah for 83. Another wicket each for Pyrah and Sidebottom, accounting for Voges and Ali Brown, left Nottinghamshire on the brink of defeat at 175 for 6, still 18 behind.
