Champions Trophy round-up: Akmal seals victory after Windies slump
Given their run-up to this Champions Trophy, West Indies must have expected a beating by Pakistan yesterday and when they slumped to 133 all out batting first those expectations appear to have been fulfilled. A team composed of largely third-choice players, however, showed their spirit in battling back to have Pakistan 76 for 5 in reply before Umar Akmal led the favourites to a five-wicket victory at The Wanderers.
Three wickets apiece for Mohammad Aamer and Umar Gul appeared to have set Pakistan up for an easy win after they bowled their opponents out in 34.3 overs – Nikita Miller (51) was the mainstay for the Caribbean side with his maiden half-century.
But Gavin Tonge (4 for 25) posed a constant threat with the ball, before Akmal (41 not out) and Shahid Afridi (17 not out) led their side home with almost 20 overs to spare.
