Michael Carberry feasted on his favourite prey yesterday – Warwickshire bowling. Over the years the Hampshire opener has made a habit of scoring heavily against the Midlanders. His career best score of 192 not out was made against these same opponents on this ground two years ago, and yesterday the near-flawless Carberry got within touching distance of bettering that mark.
For Warwickshire it was something of a Groundhog Day. In April Carberry had passed 50 in both innings of the match at Edgbaston, now here he was tormenting them again on a pitch which has been earmarked for the ground's first Test match against Sri Lanka in 2011.
Carberry was at the crease for more than five hours during which he did not offer so much as a glimmer of a chance to the toiling Warwickshire players.
On the way he shared in a Hampshire record opening stand of 261 against Warwickshire with his partner Jimmy Adams. However Adams fell on 90, the only wicket to fall in the day, caught at midwicket by Jonathan Trott off the occasional off-spin of Ian Westwood.
This match has swung between rain and runs, and there have been torrents of both. Trott and Chris Woakes had set the trend by taking their overnight stand to an unbeaten 216 for the eighth wicket, a record for Warwickshire against Hampshire.
While Trott added 44 sedate runs to his overnight 140, his partner Woakes took charge and reached a good-looking maiden first class hundred. He scored 131 with a six and 16 boundaries, having been dropped on 98 by Imran Tahir. Trott meanwhile had reached 184, so all three of his Championship hundreds have now been in excess of 150.
