Hampshire, who resumed on 114 for 2, were bowled out for 301, Shane Warne top-scoring with 47 and Caddick returning 5 for 97. When the rain came, Somerset had reached 20 for 1 in reply, having lost John Francis for four.

At Derby, Hassan Adnan held up Nottinghamshire's promotion drive for the second time this season with an excellent century.

It was the Pakistani right-hander's second hundred of the summer against the leaders, who had one of their least successful days and his fine efffort took the home side to 346 for 5 by the close of the first day.

In the First Division, Surrey took a commanding lead at Canterbury despite a ninth-wicket partnership of 103 between Ian Butler and Robert Furley which steered Kent to a first-innings total of 226.

The home side had resumed on 136 for 8, with the Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood the pick of the Surrey bowlers with figures of 5 or 54.

Surrey got off to a terrific start in reply, with Scott Newman and Richard Clinton putting on 170 for the first wicket.

Newman went on to make 111 as Surrey, who lie third in the championship just behind second-placed Kent, finished on 263 for 5.
