From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Indian leg-spinner, Anil Kumble, returned to the field in the final session on the third day of the fourth Test here yesterday, a bandage around his head and chin a visible reminder of the Merv Dillon bouncer he failed to evade on Saturday.
Kumble will return home for surgery today and will miss the five-match one-day series which starts on 25 May. He is, however, expected to take a full part in India's tour of England this summer.
"When I went out there after he was hit, first he thought he had lost a tooth or cut his cheek, said Andrew Leipus, the team's physiotherapist. "But he had no sleep and when we took the X-ray in the morning we found a break across his jaw. He will require surgery and pins will be inserted to get the jaw back in place."
Despite the injury, the spinner bowled with his usual guile and consistency, accounting for the dangerous Brian Lara, leg before for four, leaving the home side on 187 for 3 at the close.
The Indian captain, Saurav Ganguly, declared the tourists first innings on 513 for 9 just before lunch with the West Indies managing to negotiate the few overs to the break without loss.
Zaheer Khan made the breakthrough in the 25th over, Chris Gayle gloving a bouncer, although it would have come sooner had it not been for numerous dropped catches. Wavell Hinds and Ramnaresh Sarwan steadied the innings while trying to make some impact on the visitors' imposing offering. They added 55 before the opener was bowled by Sachin Tendulkar which brought Lara to the wicket and a vociferous crowd shouting their encouragement.
Earlier, the Indian batsmen VVS Laxman and Ajay Ratra continued the impressive partnership they formed on Saturday, with Ratra reaching 100 for the first time in first-class cricket, let alone in a Test match.
Laxman was the first to go, for 130, when he stepped back on to his stumps while trying to play into the leg side. They shared in a record 217-run partnership for the seventh wicket, beating the previous Indian record against West Indies of 186 at Barbados by Eknath Solkar and Dilip Sardesai in 1971.
