Bangladesh's test debut, having started on a high note, ended in a nine-wicket defeat to India yesterday. The 10th and newest side to the Test arena were skittled for 91 in their second innings, only 62 ahead, and India swept to success.

Bangladesh, who launched the match encouragingly by making 400 in their first innings, were undone by Javagal Srinath (3 for 19) and the left-armer Sunil Joshi (3 for 27) when they batted again, 29 behind.

The man-of-the-match Joshi had also made his mark with the bat earlier in the day, finishing with 92 as India extended their overnight 366 for 7 to 429 all out. Bangladesh, whose first-innings total was the second highest by a team in their maiden Test, after Zimbabwe's 456 against India at Harare in 1992-93, could scarcely have produced a more contrasting effort in the second innings.

Only two players reached double figures as Bangladesh's last seven wickets fell for 38.
