Bangladesh 197 Australia 76-1: Gillespie excels as Australia coast

Australia raced to 76 runs for the loss of one wicket Sunday after its bowling attack dismissed Bangladesh for 197 on the opening day of the second and final test, despite a plucky half century by Rajin Saleh.

Paceman Jason Gillespie and legspinners Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill claimed three wickets each to demolish the home team's batting lineup, while rookie spinner Daniel Cullen snared one.

Australia trailed by 121 runs in reply, with Phil Jaques not out on 38 and nightwatchman Jason Gillespie on five, when play was stopped five short of the regulation 90 overs due to poor light.

Mohammad Rafique dismissed Australian opener Matthew Hayden (29) when substitute fielder Alok Kapali took a catch in the day's final session.

Bangladesh clambered to 153 for seven at tea after Gillespie took three quick wickets for 11 runs in only five overs in the opening session.

Bangladesh were reduced to 67 for four by lunch, dashing its hopes of a repeat of their massive 427-run first innings total in the first test, that Australia struggled to win by three wickets at Fatullah last week.

Saleh and Aftab Ahmed endured a 61-run stand for the fifth wicket to steady the innings - until Ahmed (18) took a full toss and was caught by wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist after the ball appeared to hit his boot and went up in the air.

Television umpire Mahbubur Rahman first ruled him not out, but his on-field colleague Ian Howell raised his finger after Australian captain Ricky Ponting controversially asked for a review of the decision.

Saleh was next to go, patiently hitting 71 off 126 balls with nine boundaries, before being bowled by MacGill.

Saleh's sixth test fifty in 17 matches came off 96 balls with seven boundaries in 132 minutes.

Rafique was MacGill's next victim, when he was caught by Hayden.

After tea, Cullen got his first test wicket for five runs in only his second over when he had Mashrafee Bin Mortaza (4) caught behind.

Lee took a brilliant running catch near the rope to dismiss another test rookie, Abdur Razzak (15), off MacGill, who ended with 3-68.

Warne returned figures of 3-47 after dismissing tailender Shahadat Hossain, who was caught in a superb catch by Gillespie.

No. 7 batsman Khaled Mashud's unbeaten 34 runs off 102 balls was the second best innings for the struggling home side.

Gillespie first dismissed opener Shahriar Nafees for a duck, caught by Brett Lee, after Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar won the toss and elected to bat first at the Shahid Ruhul Amin Stadium. Nafees scored his maiden test century in the first test.

Gillespie soon claimed Bashar (9), whose loose shot was caught by Jaques, before Javed Omar became his third victim when he was trapped lbw for two runs.

Saleh then added 24 runs with Mohammad Ashraful (6) for the fourth wicket, before the latter was dismissed when Hayden took a catch off Warne.

The start of play was delayed by ten minutes following a scuffle between some press photographers and policemen over stringent security checks. The incident prompted local sports reporters to boycott coverage of the match.
