Alleyne's century in vain

David Alleyne's maiden first-class century was not enough to prevent defeat for Nottinghamshire against Warwickshire at Trent Bridge.

Alleyne, 30, had not scored a first-class fifty in his career but he followed up 57 in the first innings with an unbeaten 109 in the champions' run chase to put them within sight of victory. However, he ran out of partners as Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 316 in their second innings.

The 60-run victory for Warwickshire puts the 2004 champions a point behind the First Division's early leaders, Lancashire. James Anyon was the pick of their bowlers, taking 4 for 48 as play finished 40 minutes after lunch.

At Headingley, Matthew Prior added an unbeaten half-century to his first-innings hundred as Sussex completed a five-wicket victory over Yorkshire.

Sussex needed 54 runs on the final morning from their last five wickets - thanks to Prior's 55 not out they managed to get home in just under an hour as the Australian fast bowler, Jason Gillespie, and England's Matthew Hoggard struggled to put Prior or Robin Martin-Jenkins under much pressure.

In the Second Division, Steffan Jones starred in Derbyshire's thrilling 28-run victory over Glamorgan in Cardiff. Jones, who travels back to Wales regularly to visit his family, finished with 6 for 25 as the hosts fell just short in their pursuit of 213 to win.

Reduced to 67 for 7, Glamorgan were given a shot at an unlikely victory by Nicky Peng, with 56, and his captain, Robert Croft - but the latter ran out of partners just after tea.
