Cricket: Watkin's demolition is repaired by Wharf

ALEX WHARF scored 78 to save Nottinghamshire from deep embarrassment after they had lost their first six wickets for only nine runs against Glamorgan in the County Championship at Colwyn Bay yesterday.

Wharf set about the bowling attack in determined fashion on a dramatic opening day. Earlier, Steve Watkin, the former England bowler, had claimed five wickets in three overs to demolish the visitors' top order.

Nottinghamshire eventually finished on 228 all out, as Usman Afzaal (52) and Paul Franks (49no) helped Wharf build the recovery.

In reply Glamorgan made a shaky start losing Adrian Dale, lbw to Franks for a duck. But Steve James (43no) and Jacques Kallis (24no) led their team to 75 for 1 at the close.

At Taunton, Ed Smith, the Kent opener, powered his way to 83 as Kent finished the day on 191 for 3 against Somerset.

Worcestershire made 243 for 6 at Kidderminster. Vikram Solanki was the pick of the batsmen, hitting 75. Graeme Hick (51) and Elliott Wilson (54) also made useful contributions.

In Southampton Hampshire reached 125 for 1 in their first innings. Derek Kenway (55no) and Will Kendall (51no) sharing a steady partnership.

Rain prevented any play at Hove, where Sussex are hosting Surrey, Colchester, where Essex are playing Durham, and Lord's, where Middlesex meet Leicestershire.
